In a time when it can feel challenging to avoid the damage plastic doing to our planet, it's essential to recognise brand providing compostable options.
The benefits if compostable packaging material is they are designed with circular economy in mind.
Made from plant-based materials, compostable packaging can live beyond the waste part of the cycle, becoming a nutrient-rich compost. This improves our soil and at the same time sequesters carbon from the atmosphere.

What can you compost?
'Green' materials that are very wet, nitrogen-rich like fruit and vegetables scraps, used tea, coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, green plant cuttings, and old flowers.
'Brown' materials that are dry, carbon-rich items such as paper, cardboard, dry leaves, woody prunings, and sawdust.
How do you Compost?
Start with a compost bin. You can buy or build one out of a trash can.
Layer your bin 2 parts brown to 1 part green. Keep layers 2-5 cm thick.
Remember to add water! A light watering will help everything decompose more quickly.
Make sure to turn the compost every few weeks. This allows air to enter and speed up the process.

What to avoid ?
Do not compost meat, bones, diseased plants, pet droppings, cooking fat, glossy paper, weeds with seed, treated timber, and large branches.
