As the seasons change and sniffles start to show up, immune support becomes top of mind – especially for families with young children. Luka McCabe, founder of Boob to Food and mum of three, knows this all too well.
Her go-to natural remedy for the cooler months? A simple yet powerful homemade Onion and Honey Cough Syrup.
This easy-to-make syrup uses just a few pantry staples—raw honey, onion or garlic, and optional extras like ginger or lemon rind. It’s been a long-time favourite in Luka’s household, offering soothing relief for sore throats and gentle immune support for the whole family.
HONEY ONION COUGH SYRUP
INGREDIENTS
-
1 large brown onion, thinly sliced
(or 20–30 whole cloves of garlic, peeled) - Good-quality raw honey (enough to fully cover the onion or garlic)
Optional Add-Ins for Extra Benefits:
- 1 tsp minced or grated ginger or garlic
- 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
- 1 tbsp grated lemon rind
You’ll Need:
- A sterilised glass jar (around 250ml)
- A small saucepan (for the heated version)
QUICK METHOD
(Method 1: Quick Heated Version)
- Add the sliced onion or garlic to a saucepan and pour in enough honey to cover. Add any optional ingredients.
- Heat on the lowest possible heat for about 30 minutes—the honey should become runny and fragrant, but not overly browned.
- Pour the mixture into a sterilised glass jar. Seal and store in the fridge or a cool, dark pantry.
SLOW METHOD
(Method 2: Slow Infused Version)
- Place raw sliced onion or peeled garlic cloves into a sterilised jar.
- Cover with honey and let sit at room temperature overnight.
- The honey will gradually thin as the onion/garlic releases its juices.
- Store in the fridge or pantry as needed.
