Natural Immune Support for Families: Luka McCabe’s Go-To Remedy for Seasonal Wellness

Natural Immune Support for Families: Luka McCabe’s Go-To Remedy for Seasonal Wellness

As the seasons change and sniffles start to show up, immune support becomes top of mind – especially for families with young children. Luka McCabe, founder of Boob to Food and mum of three, knows this all too well.

Her go-to natural remedy for the cooler months? A simple yet powerful homemade Onion and Honey Cough Syrup.

This easy-to-make syrup uses just a few pantry staples—raw honey, onion or garlic, and optional extras like ginger or lemon rind. It’s been a long-time favourite in Luka’s household, offering soothing relief for sore throats and gentle immune support for the whole family.

    HONEY ONION COUGH SYRUP

    INGREDIENTS

    • 1 large brown onion, thinly sliced
(or 20–30 whole cloves of garlic, peeled)
    • Good-quality raw honey (enough to fully cover the onion or garlic)

    Optional Add-Ins for Extra Benefits:

    • 1 tsp minced or grated ginger or garlic
    • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
    • 1 tbsp grated lemon rind

    You’ll Need:

    • A sterilised glass jar (around 250ml)
    • A small saucepan (for the heated version)

    QUICK METHOD

    (Method 1: Quick Heated Version)

    1. Add the sliced onion or garlic to a saucepan and pour in enough honey to cover. Add any optional ingredients.
    2. Heat on the lowest possible heat for about 30 minutes—the honey should become runny and fragrant, but not overly browned.
    3. Pour the mixture into a sterilised glass jar. Seal and store in the fridge or a cool, dark pantry.

    SLOW METHOD

    (Method 2: Slow Infused Version)

    1. Place raw sliced onion or peeled garlic cloves into a sterilised jar.
    2. Cover with honey and let sit at room temperature overnight.
    3. The honey will gradually thin as the onion/garlic releases its juices.
    4. Store in the fridge or pantry as needed.
