What are adaptogens?

Several of these drinks contain adaptogens. The word describes certain herbs, roots and mushrooms that have been used for centuries in traditional practices, such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, to support the body's response to everyday stress. It's a traditional-use term, not a medical one. Here's what each one in our drinks is, and where it comes from.

Ashwagandha A small shrub whose root is one of the best-known herbs in Ayurveda, India's traditional system of medicine Social Alchemy Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate
Reishi A woody mushroom with a long history in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, where it was known as the "mushroom of immortality" Social Alchemy Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication, check with your doctor before trying drinks with adaptogens, particularly ashwagandha.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is decaf coffee caffeine free?

Not completely. Decaffeination removes most of the caffeine, and Beam Coffee says its process removes 99.7%. A small amount always stays in the bean. If you need no caffeine at all, choose one of the caffeine-free alternatives above.

What is the Mountain Water Process?

It's a way of removing caffeine from green coffee beans using only water, with no chemical solvents. Both Byron Bay Coffee Company decafs are made this way.

Do you sell organic decaf coffee?

Yes. Byron Bay Coffee Company's Organic Decaf Espresso and Organic Decaf Plunger are both made with certified organic beans and decaffeinated with the Mountain Water Process.

What can I drink instead of coffee with no caffeine?

Roasted dandelion and chicory, like Spiced Dandelion from Rainbow Chai, has a deep, coffee-like flavour. Rooibos chai and spice-only chai blends work well as a latte with milk, and herbal teas such as Mindful Foods Chillax Brew suit the evening.

Do you sell mushroom coffee?

We don't stock a ready-made mushroom coffee. The closest is Hummble Elevate Cacao, a cacao-based coffee alternative made with cordyceps and shiitake. We also sell single mushroom powders from SuperFeast and Teelixir, such as lion's mane, reishi and cordyceps, which some people stir into their decaf.

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are herbs, roots and mushrooms, such as ashwagandha, reishi, chaga, cordyceps and maca, that have traditionally been used to support the body's response to everyday stress. You'll find them in Social Alchemy Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate and Hummble Elevate Cacao. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication, check with your doctor first.

Is cacao caffeine free?

No. Cacao naturally contains a small amount of caffeine and a related compound called theobromine, so cacao drinks, such as Hummble Elevate Cacao, Nutra Organics Hot Chocolate, Social Alchemy Adaptogenic Hot Chocolate and Mayde Tea Drinking Chocolate, are lower in caffeine than coffee but not caffeine free.

How did you check these?

We took each decaf method from the roaster's own description, and read the ingredient list of every alternative. Recipes and processes can change, so the pack is always the final word.
