Canned fish retains most of the nutritional value of fresh fish, including protein and omega-3 fatty acids, and in some cases the canning process makes nutrients like calcium (from softened bones) more accessible. The main variable is the packing medium and any added sodium or additives.

What does MSC certified mean on canned fish?

MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification means the fish was caught using methods that have been independently assessed against sustainability standards, covering fish stock health, fishing impact on the ecosystem and effective fisheries management.

What oil should canned fish be packed in?

For clean-label canned fish, look for products packed in extra virgin olive oil or spring water. Avoid products packed in "vegetable oil" or sunflower oil, which are seed oils.

Are tinned tomatoes as good as fresh?

For cooked dishes like sauces and soups, tinned tomatoes are often considered equal to or better than out-of-season fresh tomatoes, as they're processed at peak ripeness. Look for tinned tomatoes with minimal additions, ideally just tomatoes and maybe a small amount of citric acid for acidity balance.

Should I rinse tinned legumes before using?
