Nut Free Lunchbox Snacks

Packing for a nut-free school or daycare? These are the lunchbox snacks in our range where the brand itself says the product is nut free, or where the recipe has no nuts and the brand's allergen statement doesn't mention nuts. We checked each one against the brand's own website, not just the ingredient list, because a snack can be nut free on paper but made on equipment that also handles nuts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between "nut free" and "may contain nuts"?

"Nut free" means the brand says there are no nuts in the product. "May contain" is a warning that the product is made on equipment or in a facility that also handles nuts, so traces could be present even though nuts aren't an ingredient. Most nut-free schools ask families to avoid both.

Is coconut a nut?

Coconut isn't one of the tree nuts listed under Australia's food allergen labelling rules, and most people with a tree nut allergy can eat it. Some schools still ask families to avoid it, so check your school's policy. Ceres Organics Coconut Bites and Chief's choc lemon coconut Thankful Bars contain coconut.

Are seeds OK for a nut-free lunchbox?

Seeds such as sunflower, pumpkin and chia aren't nuts, and many nut-free schools allow them. Sesame is a common allergen in its own right, so it's worth checking your school's policy.

What are some high-protein nut-free lunchbox snacks?

Barbell Foods biltong, Chief Organic Beef Sticks and Beef Brisket Bars, and KOOEE beef jerky are all made from grass-fed beef and carry no nut ingredients or nut warnings.

How did you check these?

We read each product's ingredient list, then checked the allergen statement on the brand's own website. Recipes and factories can change, so always check the pack before packing it for a child with an allergy.
